Upstart Projects supports young people aged 13-30 to find their voice in the arts and gain the skills and experience to grow as arts and media practitioners.

We help create a society which values the creativity and opinions of young people, and encourages them to flourish through arts and culture.

We do this by working with organisations to support their engagement programmes through direct delivery, evaluation, research, training and consultancy. See some of these commissions.

Here’s a few areas of our work.

VOICE MAGAZINE is an arts and culture magazine providing opportunities for young people to develop as reviewers and journalists across the UK. We offer a platform for young people to publish reviews, opinions and their own creative work. Voice is Youth Media Partner at Brighton Fringe, runs a Young Reviewers Residency at Edinburgh Fringe and covers a wide array of events.

Voice

VOICE OUTREACH seeks out young people who think the arts is ‘not for me’ and supports them to explore arts and media events in their area. Our pilot in 2019 was funded by Arts Council England and we are expanding the programme with more areas and digital delivery through 2020 and 2021 thanks to funding from UK Youth, The National Lottery Community Fund and Arts Council England.

YOUTH VOICE TRAINING helps arts professionals to strengthen young people’s influence on their organisations. We can help you refresh your work with young people and provide consultancy to develop in-house programmes. Thanks to support from the Social Investment Business and the Centre for Youth Impact we also some public programmes. Do check out our Youth Voice Training offer.

CONSULTATION AND RESEARCH  services makes use of our expertise engaging young people and the arts sector to find out views on a range of topics and evaluate programmes of work. Commissioned projects include consulting 18-25 year olds about their career advice for the Creative & Cultural Skills Council and surveying nearly 4,000 young people about how they learn music for Trinity College London.

Youth Network

ARTS AWARD VOICE COMMUNITY links and supports young people doing Arts Award and keeps in touch with them after they finish. Our growing Alumni network ensures support after the award whilst our highly popular hubs on Voice provide support & information to complete awards as a complement to advisers. Among many events, we ran the national celebration event for Arts Awards 10th Birthday, Gold Expo.

Arts Award A

ARTS AWARD SUPPORT for organisations includes providing advisers to centres without in-house expertise, programme design and mapping projects to the awards. Our work extends to supporting organisations looking to achieve Artsmark status, using our expertise in arts education, youth voice and programme design.
